An Exclusive Interview with the Elusive Takashi Miike

Director of such controversial ultra-violent horror classics
Ichi the Killer, Audition and Dead or Alive

Inquisitor David Tamarin

Girls and Corpses: Are Americans too hung up on sex and violence?

Takashi Miike: My image of American people is that they take forgiving attitudes toward violence and justice and have harsh approaches to bad guys.

G&C: Do you deliberately break taboos to offend the audience? Do you think the filmmaker’s job is to challenge the audience?

TM: The audience doesn’t exist in my mind at all once I start shooting. The audience is not my enemy and I definitely don’t think that purpose of filmmaking is the destruction of taboos. It is self-examination.

G&C: Have you ever thought of getting a sex-change operation? Do you wish you could lactate?
